The Sunline Stakes is named in honour of the highly successful mare Sunline. The Group 2 horse race is held every year during the autumn at the beautifully presented Moonee Valley Racecourse.
The Sunline Stakes is a 1,600 metre event for mares which are four-years-old and over and is worth $200,000 in prize money. Forming part of the highly regarded Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, the race is raced as a weight-for-age event.

In 2013 the Sunline Stakes will be run as a night race along with the Group 1 William Reid Stakes on Friday March 25.
Originally known as the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, from 1981 until 2000, the race name was changed to the Sunline Stakes in 2001 in honour of champion New Zealand mare Sunline (1995–2009). Sunline was the winner of thirteen Group 1 races including back to back Cox Plate victories in 1999 and 2000, two Doncaster Handicap wins in 1999 and 2002, the Coolmore Classic in 2000 and 2002, and the Hong Kong Mile in 2000.
Sunline’s career record is 48 race starts for 32 wins, 9 seconds and 3 thirds with total prize money of $11,351,607. During her racing career Sunline was the highest earning racemare in the World. At the time of her retirement Sunline had recorded an amazing 27 stakes wins, the most of any race horse in Australasian racing history.
